Sister Geneva Stumler, 84, drove fellow sisters Helen Maurer, 95, Theresita Schenk, 96, Dolorita Libs, 96, and Mary Claude, 86, to watch the demolition of Madonna Hall on Tuesday morning on the grounds of Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand. The five-story residence hall was built in 1968 and home to the Sisters of St. Benedict’s Marian Heights Academy, which closed in 2000. The Sisters explored a multitude of alternative options such as turning Madonna Hall into a nursing home or letting Ivy Tech’s network of community colleges repurpose the hall for its own use. None of those options reached fruition. The Sisters of St. Benedict will celebrate their 150th anniversary this summer.
